The Joint Chiefs of Staff told Truman in 1946 that Greenland "was totally worthless to Denmark" Truman's Secretary of State James Byrnes said that Truman's proposal "seemed to come as a shock and insult" to the Danish officials who turned it down. It turned out to be a bad move on Denmark's part (and lucky for us) As part of the deal Truman was going to trade part of the Point Barrow district of Alaska including the rights to any oil/mineral rights. In 1967 the richest oil strike in U.S. history was discovered there! Bad move Denmark! Trump's proposal to buy Greenland makes a lot of sense but I'm too tired to explain to the anti-Trumpers on this forum.Comment

This anti-Trumper asks.... buy Greenland from whom? Denmark? They say they don't own it. Now what? Get the Greenlanders become a US territory in exchange for promises of casino financing? The Greenlanders might take one look at Puerto Rico and decide they're better off sticking with Denmark and the EU. The gringos would be coming to strip the land and leave behind a ruined wasteland. One generation of Inuit would get a dose of modern life only to doom the rest.
I've been to Iceland. Everyone speaks English, unless they don't want you to know what they're saying, which can happen in a split second. Talked to a guy who liked to come to North America to hunt deer, elk, moose, whatever.Last edited by togor; 08-26-2019, 05:23.Comment

Been there 4 times but 3 were only 1 day stopovers, very homogenous society with beautiful women. You know about the rare minerals that we mostly get from China such as dysprosium or praseodymium that are critical to the production of everything from smart phones to electric cars to lasers. Right now we are dependent on Beijing. China could cut off our supply and is trying to corner the market for rare earth minerals in Greenland. Buying Greenland would put these valuable strategic minerals in our hands. The earth is in a warming stage(not here to argue man made, carbon emissions, etc.) This global warming and the unavoidable receding of the Arctic sea ice will open a new sea route in the Arctic that can be used for commercial as well as military vessels. This could potentially reduce the time it takes to travel from Asia to the West by as much as 20 days. The New York Times(not pro Trump by any means) says as sea ice melts "Arctic routes become more direct voyage times could fall to less than 3 weeks in some cases making Arctic shipping potentially more attractive than the southern routes in the coming decades" The US and its allies have a major interest in not allowing these Arctic sea lanes to fall into Russian or Chinese hands. Purchasing Greenland would help the US better secure these emerging strategic passageways. They called Alaska "Seward's folly" just sayin.Comment
