The Russians don't care about who is President, except so far as it furthers their plans to build up the new Russian Empire and/or destroy their rivals.
Obama's election provided the means to
build Russia's economy by purchasing US strategic assets with the assistance of the US government. At the same time, they knew the Democrats would tank the US economy. When electing Obama didn't provide them economic and political gains fast enough, they decided to go the other route.
By supporting Trump's election, as well as supporting his previously purchased Democrat allies efforts to lead a coup, Putin is trying to destroy the US politically. As they have been for years (since Roosevelt gave away half of Europe?), the Democrat are Russia's "useful idiots".Comment

Tom, please don't try to turn the above into a defence of Trump, as you do so often.
Trump is merely the lesser of two evils. I voted for him once - when the only other viable choice was a person whom I believe is truly Evil.
I believe there is a moral and ethical chasm between Hillary Clinton and most other Democrats, even the misguided and naive AOC. They may stand in the valley of our fears; Hillary is willingly in Gehenna.Comment

Roosevelt was a dying man for all of 1944. After Tehran he pops up here and there, like in Hawaii, but overall is a shadow of his former self with CHF and a systolic that reached 230(!). It's fair to say that Stalin took advantage of this but not accurate to say that Roosevelt gladly gave things away.
Everyone born since 1945 had lived in a world order pretty much envisioned by FDR. If you go back and read history, you see it's true. So Trump wants to end that era and go back to how it was before the war. I therefore repeat my question, with BostonBound in mind:
Trump beats FDR in 1940 running on an isolationist platform. What happens from there?Last edited by togor; 10-15-2019, 03:41.Comment

RE: Defence
Who in the US spells defense with a "c"? Slip of the British English perhaps."The first gun that was fired at Fort Sumter sounded the death-knell of slavery. They who fired it were the greatest practical abolitionists this nation has produced." ~BG D. UllmanComment

Nobody to try the hypothetical? Too easy, right? I know:
Trump does a terrific trade deal with Japan who wants to buy scrap iron and petroleum from us. Improved trade relations with the Japanese dissuade them from attacking Pearl Harbor. Japan goes on to consolidate holdings in East Asia including former European colonial possessions. The Philippines become a source of domestic political tension, with Trump arguing that they need not be a point of contention preventing better relations with Hirohito. Eventually he prevails against the "deep state" in the War and State Depts, and signs a treaty with Japan that guarantees the independence of the Philippines, allowing US forces to redeploy closer to home.
Meanwhile in Europe, Trump declares that we have no vital interests at stake, and will trade with all combatants including US-flagged commerce with the continent over British objections. This also creates friction with the Canadians, requiring increased vigilance at border crossings. As German pressure mounts and with no immediate prospect for help from the USA, the Churchill government falls and is replaced by one that sues for peace with Germany, rendering the UK to be a vassal state of the Third Reich.
Okay maybe not exactly like that the point is made. Does anyone really think Roosevelt got it wrong? Is Trump really getting it right now by trying to turn the USA back into a regional geopolitical power?Comment
