    The rain forest fires

Poor farmers are burning the woods.

How do you get rid of 5 million people and make it look like an accident?
If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.

I know this will probably not go over well, but I was talking with my brother the other day about this rain forest burning, and we were wondering why everybody gets upset with clearing the rain forest, but we pay farmers here to tear down fence rows and clear trees. Maybe we should look in our own backyard to start solving the problem of losing trees.

Not "poor" farmers. Large agribusiness and businesses wanting the land for investment, building, etc. Indigenous and "poor" farmers are doing no more than they have always done. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

Actually, it is poor farmers who do most of the damage -- there are far more of them than there used to be. They are the pioneers -- agribusiness follows them, doesn't lead them. That's why it's politically impossible to stop this destruction.

We have. There is more forest land in the US today than when Columbus sailed. Ever hear of the Conservation Reserve Program?

The Conservation Reserve Program ( CRP) is a cost-share and rental payment program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Under the program, the government pays farmers to take certain agriculturally used croplands out of production and convert them to vegetative cover,..

I know several Farmers that have land in the program,

in this area it is referred to Soil Conservation,

part of the selling point was to keep soil erosion out of the Chesapeake Bay

It's done good things for conservation -- we have nothing to reproach ourselves for when it comes to the environment.
