The Islamic Republic of Iran is peculiar in that hatred of the United States is practically a founding principle of the state. To say they've developed a really deep bench of people ready to take the fight to America if called upon is a giant understatement. A false choice is has been presented: do nothing or hit the Iranian #2, martyring an otherwise replaceable guy while infuriating the entire country.

Can't we think of other options? For example, get with the Israelis and knock out 500 Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon and/or Syria. That would degrade the Iranian capability but in such a way (killing non-Persians) unlikely to piss off the Iranian street.

It speaks to how much our National Security apparatus has fallen apart under Trump that a mob hit is the best we can do.
