Even if there is some truth in that, it hardly matters because Trump doesn't do diplomacy, and the Iranians have no reason to believe that they can trust Trump. If you'll pardon the pun, it's Persianal now.

what leader , esp in that part of the world, wants one of his Generals to have more power, or the perception of more power, than the leader?
with that culture, power is everything, and if your subordinate is more powerful,, well he may just need to goComment

In my youth I had the Big Golden Book of Disney's 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. I remember the sequence where Professor Arronax is pleading with Ned Land, asking him to be patient, allow the Professor to talk with Nemo. Ned Land responds:
"Nemo's like a mad dog, Professor. You can't reason or argue with him-you can only muzzle him or shoot him !"
There was a famous news commentator , H. V. Kaltenborn, he spoke fluent German, He met and spoke with Hitler several times before Hitler was made Chancellor, concluded that Hitler was simply incapable of logical thought. And so it is with the mullahs. I suspect many in the Mideast and the Muslim world are secretly cherring Trump on, realizing he's standing up the bully.Comment

By your statement, you are vouching for the honesty of our enemies?

Neither of us is qualified to understand Iranian power politics. But the difference between real and apparent power is a universal dynamic. POTUS for example is unarmed. In the German army, the larger the rank, the smaller the gun.
In any case, it doesn't take an expert to see that it would be suicide for any Iranian leader to advocate taking Trump at his word.Last edited by togor; 01-08-2020, 05:11.Comment

true, we are not qualified,
however we do know that the rest likely does not apply to those in that culture,, (that should be a univeral dynamic)
in a culture that thinks we are infidels, women are 2nd class or worse, saving face and perceptions of power are everything,
it is true, the General was more powerful, then that scenario may be likely,
if not,, well, we will never know,
I have also read some reports that suggest he (the General) just got too cocky, or lackadaisical in his travels,
he knew he was on a list, but was to arrogant (it has been suggested) to think anyone would ever confront him,
guess he forgot to tell trump,,,Comment

seems to be a bad week in Iran,
dead general
many die at his funeral
missiles miss everything except an airliner, killing mostly Iranians (some Canadians likely of Iranian descent)
and earthquakes,
