Plenty of businesses living paycheck to paycheck too. Not everyone has a pension coming in to sustain their long adapted lifestyle.

For people that need assistance, $1200 isnt going to do anything.

Watching foreign news this is becoming a reality in parts of Africa now. Dairy farmers are pouring out milk and vegetables are being turned under. Some places are reporting a shortage of...chicks as people are now starting their own flock.

we do online shopping and have received all we have ordered,

some things out at the local aldi's I pass on the way home, but just paper products,

plenty of food,

Our local WM's have got limits on most everything. One item per family. One pack of hamburger meat, one chicken or pack of chicken, one pack of pork items, etc. The shelves aren't bare but not far from it.

friend of mine is still a store manager for one of the grocery retailers,

he said the benefit of this is they can get more shelfs cleaned, and they are able to rotate stock better since folks are buying up as much as they can,


what some folks don't seem to realize is, with all the schools, daycares, and restaurants closed or doing curbside only, (thus business is low, one guy told me his take out sales is usually 20% of hid daily business, and now are all of his sales (so he is down ~60%)
that the grocery stores are the place to get dinner, lunch, breakfast, snacks etc,

when I was in the business, take out and sit down restaurants were my competition to a degree, now that comp is gone and folks still have to eat

I have a friend who is an independent trucker. He reached out to us last night and updated us on what he is seeing on the road and his concerns. He is parking his rig. In his opinion freight rates have crashed. That is the rates the drivers and companies are getting to haul the loads. Its a trickle down effect. He says while their is good money to haul it, the freight brokers who book the loads are holding onto more of it then before. Therefor independent owner operators aren't getting enough to make a profit. He also said that meat/poultry processors are having trouble with call outs and they are shutting down plants so there isn't that type of product to haul to the stores. I googled that last night to confirm and some of the big plants are having major issues with attendance. I have a friend in NJ who has a friend who owns two plants and he confirms this.

So off I went to the store to see what I could find and saw very empty shelves. Bought what I thought we needed. Just a heads up as the topic of the thread is food.

As producers dump their milk and destroy their produce they will have to charge more for what they do produce. IMHO I don't see a major problem until the fall as the home gardens go down for the cold months. Now if there is bad summer say drought then all bets are off. I am putting in new passive ventilation in the greenhouse to keep our growing season year around, not just in the cold months.
I have already put out non-electric warning devices to let me know of intruders so that I can act accordingly. New solar lights are also going in to light up the areas of interest as well.
Kenya has a locust problem as does most of Africa and will want other's to provide food for them. Africa has had problems feed itself as long as I can remember and now it is getting worse. I hope that this does not come here but anything is possible.

Given that a number of meat packing plants are closing, the economic law of supply and demand will likely see the cost of meat go up as it becomes scarce. It might be a good idea to stock up on some before it gets too pricey although not sol much that you will be a "hoarder". Our local Costco has an early morning time slot available for seniors (defined as over 60) and handicapped (presumably physical not mental). It starts at 8:00 am. I got there this morning just before 8:00 and found that half the parking lot was full and that I had to wait in line to enter the store. They're very organized but at checkout time they had everybody marshalled in a single line that was more than 100 yards long. They seemed not to have any shortages except for hand cleaner and had all the paper products stacked up in the middle of the store rather than hidden in a back corner. Given what I said about meat, I purchased one package of three steaks and that should last us a while.

working retail grocery, there were a few stores I ran that had senior centers near by, and they would bring a bus load a couple times a week,

it's amazing how much some older folks just don't care about some things,, like hygiene, and others look like they are dressed to go to church,


one company I worked for did a senior discount on Tuesdays,, it was our 3rd or 4th busiest day (depending on how good a day Fri was)
