We have what may be called a representative democracy. The foundation is voting. We have chosen over time to make the connection between voters and some officeholders more direct, such as US Senators.

Conservatives loved that in the 1970s and 1980s, when winning elections came easy. Now they want to restrict the ballot and it's reach so as to preserve a grip on power. There is no other word for this besides despotism. The thing people accuse Obama of being, they now openly advocate as the remedy.

"One man, one vote" came from the various redistricting cases in the 1960s, the Court said the populations of legislative districts had to be as equal as possible. Many New England towns still practice direct democracy-the Town Meeting, e.g. And it was the Progressives in the 1890s who pushed Initiative and Referendum as a way of breaking the power of moneyed interests and a self-serving political class.
And as the current uproar over the replacement for RBG shows, for many having an appointed SCOTUS that functions as a constitutional convention every time it is in session is their preferred method of government.
