    this part is true,

we did not have facial recognition software, but did have access to CC and best of all, Rewards card numbers,

Stores like Target and Walmart have facial recognition software and they will put you into a database even if you’ve only stolen one small thing and will wait until you’ve stolen a cumulative amount of 600-1000 dollars worth of merchandise so they can charge you with something bigger.

There's a big difference between being a kleptomaniac for whom stealing is fun
versus someone who's being forced to steal because of hunger

But all thieves say they were forced to steal. I remember some riots years ago, when Jesse Jackson was interviewed on TV. He said, "When people are hungry, they will steal." As he was saying it, the camera showed a guy coming out of a store with a couch on his back.

Empathy seems to be in short supply around here,

So does honesty seem to be in short supply. No one need go hungry around here -- we have local food banks and we take care of everyone. No need to steal.

unless DT is talking about folks here on the forum with those attitudes

Not everywhere is in your neck of the woods.
Some food banks in the country run out of food with people still in line.
                        Tough sh!t huh ?

Unfortunately DT is correct in this regard. The "gimme" American society has hit a brick wall and it is starting to hurt. Some people want other's to pick the food and bring it to them and then complain when they don't. Locally jobs are still open and no takers, yet people will write in and complain about not enough to eat because of lack of government resources to take care of them!
60 years ago I was read and did read stores about the Little Red Hen or the Grass Hopper. Stories that inspired children on taking care of self, now it is Gov.Com will take care of you so don't worry. All one has to do is to look at other societies and history to see where America is going. America is a divided nation and in more way's then political. People in the larger cities will suffer first as local government continues to be overwhelmed and looking to the fed to rescue them. As more money is printed inflation will start to increase to the detriment of all except the very rich as usual.
Biden and company are now taking the helm of a ship that is headed in harms way with no idea of what to do or how to do it. Many on this forum are/will suffer, some of us won't. I am not too worried about us as worry does no good. Each day we try and build our walls a little stronger to keep the cold winter out and us a little safer. I depend on the government to mess things up and I have yet to be disappointed in their ability to achieve failure.

I used to donate to the annual Toys for Tots until I had first hand knowledge that the recipients were selling those toys for drug money.
