It was not without some reservations in 1909 when Lee, and Washington were chosen. I find the history fascinating. Plenty of woke folks a century ago, did not want Lee placed in the capitol, purely to defend his legacy from future criticism. Guess they were right all along.

Lee set as good an example as anyone after the war. By all accounts he was uninterested in his likeness being used to sustain the divisions that broke open in the 1860s.
