Robert E. Lee's statue is removed from the Capitol after state of Virginia has him replaced with civil rights campaigner Barbara Johns

A statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that has represented Virginia in the U.S. Capitol for 11 years has been removed

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam released a statement Monday morning saying that workers had removed Lee's statue from the Capitol Building

A Virginia state commission had decided that Lee was not a fitting symbol for the state and he'll be replaced by civil rights campaigner Barbara Johns

Confederate monuments became a flash point after the Memorial Day death of George Floyd, which sparked Black Lives Matter protests around the U.S.

President Donald Trump has maintained that Confederate statues should remain, while Democrats have pushed for them to be taken down

It's always been a decision for Virginia.

It was not without some reservations in 1909 when Lee, and Washington were chosen. I find the history fascinating. Plenty of woke folks a century ago, did not want Lee placed in the capitol, purely to defend his legacy from future criticism. Guess they were right all along.

Lee set as good an example as anyone after the war. By all accounts he was uninterested in his likeness being used to sustain the divisions that broke open in the 1860s.
