The destroyer has been decommissioned and turned into a floating museum and he probably figured it didn't need good ones anyway..

Yup. My father-in-law died in '70 and was buried in a cemetery that required all graves and markers to be flush with the ground (to make cutting the grass easy.) Each grave had a bronze plaque and a bronze vase that normally fit into a receptacle. One morning every speck of bronze was gone in the whole cemetary.
