    Ted Cruz in Mexico

Have to love the irony of Ted Cruz heading to Cancun at a time when his home state, Texas, is enjoying a third world standard of living, and many residents are encouraged to boil their water.

I stop short of criticizing him, however. He is a US Senator, representative to the Federal Government, and the calamity that has befallen Texas is a state problem, a problem of ERCOT policymaking.

Now if poolside he were to have demanded a strong Federal response, that would be something else.

So if you stop short of criticizing him why have your brought this up? He represents me and my family at the federal level and I don't care if he is on vacation in Cancun. I've been to third world countries and our current situation isn't squat compared to those countries.

      Cancel culture got his vacation.

I'm sure it was already planned, he came back. Nobody likes winter, the Cruz family is not unique for liking the warmer weather.

Because of the irony of him choosing to ride the storm out in Mexico, a place normally derided for being inferior. But even troubled lands can have lovely parks and resorts for foreign tourists.

Texas's problems are temporary, but whether or not they are recurring depends on whether policymakers learn anything from this event.

As a legislator he has no executive authority or command responsibility and I expect travel to Texas is very difficult right now.

You nailed it! If he rented a dog sled and was carrying provisions to people snowed in, they'd criticize him.

Cruz made a habit of condemning people on vacation. You shovel what you sow this time around.

The same for Obama, Bush, Clinton, etc.

Texas is having problems, and Texas is run by Republicans. Are you connecting the two? Because I am not. You make everything about politics, except when you don't want to, and then you accuse someone else of doing it.

I talked to a buddy who makes a living as a technical analyst on the wholesale electricity markets. Two interesting things we discussed, from a technical perspective:

                    1) They did not de-rate their generation supply stack according to forecast weather conditions. This is common practice in industry but for some reason it didn't happen for ERCOT.

                    2) Presidents's Day did not do them any favors. Normally an operator books Friday gas on a Thursday, and Saturday, Sunday, Monday gas on a Friday. With President's Day, the gas markets weren't back on until Tuesday, meaning operators would have to buy gas on Friday for Tuesday delivery. With #1 above (wrong estimations about the supply stack), there were gas turbines on Tuesday that could have run but for the lack of scheduled gas deliveries.

Naturally Abbott blames wind turbines for this, but other states, like Minnesota, have wind turbines that seem to operate in cold weather. Ultimately this a planning failure for a low-probability, high impact event.

sounds like the guy buying the gas dropped the ball, and it seems like buying it day by day as you suggest is not the best way,

as a DM I worked for once said, when questioning us Store Managers on labor, conditions, and volume sales ,,,

how many times does the first of the month come around?

as in the calendar was invented for a reason,

and this was not the first President's day,,

(and one should watch the weather forecast)

Togor is right. If Cruz had not retreated to the lovely country of Mexico, Texans would be basking in 70 degree temperatures.

This has nothing to do with Trump.

Cruz went to Mexico with his family. Once they were checked in and settle in he boarded a plane back to Texas where he is now at his home. According to others he has done this before too.

Snow on wind generators is not a big problem like in Minnesota, but inches of ice are a big problem. If the unit keeps trying to turn it can damage the internals of the turbine.

                              Hyperbole much, Red?

And add to it equipment problems, Lyman, that turbine operators who were contracted for gas had difficulty getting their equipment online because of the weather. The grid is complex, and if at some point both supply and demand are FUBAR'd enough, then the lights start going out. For sure though people are trying to sort it out.
