The one term aspect of it is the thing. And not just presumably. Because if he and his army of winged monkey lawyers jigger some argument to give him a 3rd term, the whole enterprise is down the tubes. After that, anything goes! But you're right, he would try!!

Best outcomes then are that he doesn't run, or loses in the primary to someone who has at least a shred of respect for our systems of governance.

The Constitution does indeed limit the to two terms, consecutive or not.

Bill Clinton once suggested that the Constitution should be amended to allow more than two terms. His proposal was the two term limits back to back should be retained but a President (wonder who he had in mind) should be able to run again, even after consecutive terms if he skipped one.
