I like Togors rant, he sounds like my dad.
Who are the children?

money talksBack to the OP,
Douglas County in Colorado leans GOP in voting and is above-average in terms of income. Seems to be red trending purple and that might for some heated politics.
If the board wants to fire the teachers and thinks they'll be easy to replace, I guess they can try.Comment

It can, and in some places, it does.
But overall, it's not talking loud enough.
Talk to your teacher friends and they will tell you the number of applicants is way down, and subs are harder to get.
It's not the public schools failing because of "woke" disease. It's because home life sucks for too many kids, and parents take the kid's side now when discipline issues arise. Too many kids want easy As or have no interest at all in achievement. Why go into a field where the pay sucks and everyone is mad at you all the time? For the love of the kids? Yes to a point. But there is a limit
Like a buddy of mine, now a superintendent up north, said to me 20 years ago: "we have to bend over backwards to get kids to want to learn". 20 years ago! It's even worse now.Comment

I know a guy who is an assistant principal at a Somali heavy school. AP gets the discipline duty. Asked him, are the kids better/worse than typical upper-midwest natives? Kids are the same, he says, as far as screwing up. The difference is what happens after the call home. Somali parents are old school, don't let their kids run the household. Result is a bunch of Somali kids learning in US schools and scoring high on the tests.
You guys bash my old school conservative attitudes but fact is those old ways get results. It's because I never let Rush, Sean, Tucker, Bill, or any of those other guys get in my head. Rush Limbaugh died childless and wealthy and did enormous damage to Conservatism.Comment

Yes and I'll tell you why:
Since the country industrialized, and urbanized, 1890's, there has always been a fringe with radical, looney, left-wing, illiberal ideas. They've been with us all the way through our rise as a 20th century power. Dealing with them is something we could always do. What kept them in check was that ordinary working people didn't buy their schtick, and conservatives were sensible, kept to the bedrock principles of the country.
What's different now isn't that there aren't left wing looneys. Still have those. Or that working people don't buy their stuff. Still true. What's different now is that a giant swath of conservatism has lost its freaking mind. The latest example is the RNC calling the January 6 riot "normal political discourse". F__k me but they really said that!
So of course I take aim at these phoney conservatives who are signs of a degenerate political age. They are where the problem is!
Long story short: we've lived with a looney illiberal left for a very long time A looney illiberal right at the same time may well sink us.
Hopefully that makes sense.Last edited by togor; 02-06-2022, 04:46.Comment

Let's talk Limbaugh for a sec.
What are the 2 things in this country that really set us back the last 20 years?
I'll say:
1) the whole Iraq War and overdoing the GWOT thing. We got good results against some high profile terrorists but the costs were beyond comprehension.
2) Massive outsourcing of US manufacturing work to Asia.
When these things were going on, what was Rush doing about them? I'll tell you what he was doing. He was bashing women, poor people, and immigrants.
And the wars continued, and the jobs went east.Last edited by togor; 02-06-2022, 04:52.Comment

how could Rush have changed any of that,
I used to listen to him once in a while, mostly in the 90's,
never heard him bash much except Liberals and liberal policyComment

You notice our resident liberal doesn't say what HE did about the situation.
Nor does he discuss how this "massive outsourcing" was driven by left wing policies -- taxes and government over-regulation.Comment

Unfortunatley, I agree that too many people pretend they are conservatives when they are actually looney liberals in disguise. And, unfortunately there are too many total ignorant and foolish people out there that claim to be conservative but are uneducated. Anti Vaxxers come to mind.
If anti vaxxers existed in the 1950's and 60's we would still be fighting Smallpox, Polio, Whooping Cough, and 13 other diseases. Moat of which took years to conquer because the scientists were using slide rules and optical microscopes...

When communism fell apart in Eastern Europe in the early 90s, there were a bunch of party bosses who wanted to stay on top. The most successful method found was to turn themselves into right wing populist, nationalist politicians. Seems that it's pretty easy to get people who were raised for decades under communism to just blame outsiders for everything that's wrong in society. Plenty of votes to be had that way, but it's still the same folks running the show.Comment
