Looking at this from Putin's point of view, he could not let the Ukraine
fall into Western's hands - which is where it was going. The Ukraine
was a principle part of the centuries old Russian Empire and I would
imagine of considerable importance to Putin for both it's size and
more importantly - a matter of pride. I don't think Putin is an idiot,
I think he knew there would be huge repercussions, but to him it was
more important to keep the Ukraine than his ties to the west.
He, or rather the Russian people will suffer from the fallout. I feel
sorry for them but it's always the peasants who suffer, never their
leaders.
That's the way I see it.
