The services failed to meet their recruiting goals, and they are having a hard time with retention due to the favoritism shown to women.

When wages and hiring are up in the private sector, it increases manpower challenges for the services.

Young guys aren't bothered about working alongside women like some grandfathers. And at another level, the "there's too many broads in the military" argument is counter-intuitive. Think about it: most young men very much like to be around women.

Another interesting fact about super carriers is they are very hard to sink.

In 1967, eight 1,000 lb bombs plus several smaller bombs and dozens of rockets detonated on the flight deck of the USS Forestal. Lots of damage and 134 fatalities but not even close to sinking her.

Then there was the USS America. The Navy tried to scuttle her but could not so they first used it as a target and finally called in the engineers and their explosives. It took them 4 weeks to get it done.

The USS America is the only supercarrier ever sunk, either on purpose or in combat. Blake Horner, Mechanical Engineer, explains why on Quora ?It took four weeks and they ended up having to scuttle her from on board due to her not sinking. She is not only far larger than WWII battleships, but she is also a lot tougher. While she does not have the heavy armor the battleships of yore had, she does have a double layered hull, meaning weapons have to push through alternating layers of steel and empty pockets to reach her internals.

Sinking is one thing, putting out of action is another.

With hypersonics I'll also stipulate that something moving at high mach could miss its target. But in the battle of Okinawa the Navy took significant casualties to Kamikaze aircraft launched from the home islands, and what were Kamikazes if not a low speed self-guided missile? Yes AAA and CAP got most of them, but people are constantly working on new ways for missiles to get through to kill the fleet.
