The better comparison is alcohol. About 2X more deaths.

We tried a Constitutional Amendment, but between the cheaters, and the mobsters, and other, we changed our minds.

then you are part of the group(s) that want to ban an object vs fixing the problem?

what if the kid ran his pickup thru the playground, or a soccer game?

what if he used a revolver or a 22 LR rifle like a 10\22?
      or a M1 Carbine

what if he did use a hammer? say an air powered or electric with safeties removed?

murders are bad, kids murders are worse, however done,

blaming a firearm is not gonna change a thing,,

remember, AR's have been around since 1956,,,,,

It's not my problem I raised my kid right . Seems the police have no problem collecting checks at the same time they failed to do the job they showed up for . Why do the losers that cause problem want me to be responsible for it . As far as gun control he passed the background check enough said .

          why the quotes??

and yes, any citizen, and even green card holders, (resident aliens) can buy firearms as long as they pass the NICS check

non resident aliens can by some firearms with a few hoops to go thru,

it's not what someone thinks you have done, or even what you have done, it is what you have been charged with or convicted of (or mental illness reported) to the system that gets you a denial,

How does one separate the folks who can own guns no problem, who can be left about their business, from the ones who will do wrong?

This is the nub of it.

Engineers know that you can build filters, pretty precise ones, for all kinds of things. But those filters aren't free. There's a cost to them, in time, maybe extra expense. No free lunch, no free filter.

So it's doable, if the will is there.

In other words, part of the problem, or part of the solution.

as told to me by someone long ago,

there is a time in every project to shoot the engineer and move forward

the world is not yes\no, black\white etc,

how do we separate? we do as we have been,, prosecute if needed, have the mental health folks do what they do, and then actually report it or act on it,

vs armchair quarterbacking it over and over

red flags only work if the depts act and report them,
mental health flags only work if posted to the NICS system,

that is the failure in the system, how do we fix and accurately and fairly fix the mental health issues?

remember,, like computers and programs,, they are only as good as the information provided will let them be

As you know, a lot of people are reluctant to flag. Because of the false negatives, and the human inclination to not be the "bad guy".

Complacency even in the existing system is a problem. The Uvalde shooter put out the warning signs, but nobody on social media gave enough of a crap about him to bother.

So maybe the Red Flag system is working about as well as it ever will. In which case, now what?

Is there such a thing as making it less convenient for mass shooters who have stayed off the grid, put out no warning signs, to arm up? While at the same time not inconveniencing the crap out of reliable gun owners?

Even TSA offers frequent travelers a way to skip some of the lines.

As we have noticed, a lot of imagination has recently been put into devising laws on voting and abortions. Surely some of that legislative cleverness could be put to use to find ways to slow down the rate of these spectacular incidents, that put our rights in a negative spotlight.
