That's a tremendous shift in the last 40 years. And I don't think it is good.

David Brooks wrote a column about this a few years back. Better educated men (who tend to be more liberal than their less educated counterparts) are more likely to be marriage material.

Statistics show children who grow up in single parent households are more likely to drop out of school, take drugs and commit crimes (Please don't submit anecdotal evidence -- we're talking about the rule, not the exception.) Children born out of wedlock start out with one strike against them.Comment

I guess most of us remember back in the 60's and earlier that when a woman became pregnant out of wedlock she would leave home to have the baby. She was shamed as well as the whole family. The productive couple would usually get married to save face. If not then sometimes there would be a "shotgun wedding".Comment

Here's an example of what I mean. This is from the Census data:
In 2009 14.3% of the total U.S. population lived in poverty
30.4% of custodial single mothers and their children lived in poverty
18.8% of custodial single fathers and their children lived in poverty
Single mothers make up the overwhelming majority of single parents, and they and their children are twice as likely to live in poverty as the general population (30.4% versus 14.3%.)Comment

"Deadbeat sperm donors" ? 45 years of the "woman's right to choose" has given us a couple of generations of men who could care less about "their children.
I like to quote the retired NJ judge who told a welfare queen who appeared before him that she was using her children as "meal tickets".

So your argument is "if you build it (human baby) they (baby daddy) will come"? Seems like a stretch to me. Marriage as an economic institution may no longer be a necessity. Or maybe cable TV shows about over&the-top expectations has muddled thinking such that weddings are thought of more like coronations now.Comment

And if it happened to a teenager still in school, she was, RIGHTLY, treated like a leper--made an example to the other sluts in her school. Now, preggo sluts are allowed to become role-models in their schools, parading up & down the halls to show the other sluts that getting preggo is really not a big deal, no doubt telling them how she's looking forward to her first welfare check--which may be a pittance to an adult, but more money than many teenage girls have ever seen.I guess most of us remember back in the 60's and earlier that when a woman became pregnant out of wedlock she would leave home to have the baby. The men in these torrid affairs have a responsibility to bag it don't they? The language used here is straight out of stone age.
