I've told this story before, but it's worth repeating as the
    subject is medieval churches/Cathedrals;
When I was a youngster in London there were two 12th century
Norman Churches nearby. They had magnificent stained glass
windows, their own enclosed cemeteries and when inside, even
if you were not particularly religious, you couldn't help but feel
a sense of peace. In the early 70s I went back (from here) to
visit relatives. My brother-in-law took me to see the church sites
    - both had been demolished and replaced with low-income housing.
Each was covered in graffiti and strewn with trash.
To this day it still bothers me when I think of it. What kind of
people could have ordered that ?

A tragic loss for western civilization . I can't help but wonder if the renovation crew was the lowest bidder Remember the giant statues destroyed some years

      back by you know who

Gotta make room for all those muzzies coming in and taking over. History means nothing to them.

Here in Ottawa the government is starting a project to renovate the Centre Block of Parliament, a building which is only 100 years old. It is expected to take 10 years to renovate the stone structure and it is intact. I can only imagine how many decades it's going to take to rebuild an 800 year old cathedral after a massive fire. I am expecting the President of France to announce that the building will be completely rebuilt starting immediately. Politically and morally and historically it is the only thing to do

History means quite a bit to all totalitarians of any stripe. It must be re-written.

Very sloooooooly. It typically took a century or more to build a cathedral like Notre Dame.

even so, it is a marvel considering the methods, material, transport etc,

something like 13000 mature oaks harvested and transported to Paris,,

logistics alone are staggering, esp over a century

hoping it is actually a construction error,, anything else may not go well,

The UK has had Socialist government for many of the last 70 years, their Great Prophet Marx derided religion as "the opiate of the people", so demolishing ancient churches to make way for "low income" housing is in character for them. In Moscow in 1931 they dynamited the Cathedral of Christ the Savior-dedicated in 1882 to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon. The planned Palace of the Soviets on that site was never built, the Cathedral has been rebuilt.

Historians consistent rank Henry as the worst British Monarch. And with good reason. Although Cromwell looted many more churches, including Canterbury Cathedral -- which was by then Church of England.

I'll bet yje Sistine Chapel protection group met today to review their insurance and check out slrinkler systems.

Notre Dame fire began immediately after it closed and the visiturs left. Sparks won't start wood, had to land in something easily combustible.

Good God Vern, you do come up with nonsense.
How about "Ethelred the Unready" ?

The main structure is still standing, thanks to those Flying Buttresses.

Regardless of the cause of the fire, 100 years from now it will be regarded as the symbolic end to Western Civilization and the beginning of the new Dark Ages.
