I've told this story before, but it's worth repeating as the
subject is medieval churches/Cathedrals;
When I was a youngster in London there were two 12th century
Norman Churches nearby. They had magnificent stained glass
windows, their own enclosed cemeteries and when inside, even
if you were not particularly religious, you couldn't help but feel
a sense of peace. In the early 70s I went back (from here) to
visit relatives. My brother-in-law took me to see the church sites
- both had been demolished and replaced with low-income housing.
Each was covered in graffiti and strewn with trash.
To this day it still bothers me when I think of it. What kind of
people could have ordered that ?
