Mass shootings get the headlines but the real damage is done in suicides, domestic violence, and general violent crime. Every gun leaves the factory in a legal status. To date we don't cook up firearms in illegal operations like they do drugs. The voyage from factory legal gun to crime gun could be interdicted but so far people don't trust the government to stay within the lines. Pretty much what you said.

I had a discussion with a nun who linked firearms and suicide. I pointed out that Japan has total gun control and a much higher suicide rate than the United States. Explain that.

I also pointed out that most suicide is caused by mental depression. "Are you telling me, Sister, that a man who was so depressed he would put a gun in his mouth and pull the trigger, would be magically cured if he couldn't get a gun -- and would go skipping and whistling through life from then on?"

She was a narcissist -- challenging her beliefs was pointless.
