Actually DT raises an interesting point. Put aside an EMP burst at high altitude with a radar track back to launch point. Just consider a Hiroshima-sized bomb going off in a harbor, with the source not immediately clear. Say a Paki nuke got loose and was detonated in the Port of Los Angeles. Response to that will be complicated and not necessarily nuclear, especially if the Paki government denies committing the act and only belatedly admits the theft of a warhead.

In the event of a meteor hit like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, a direct hit vaporizing everything would be the best scenario. A meteor hitting the other side of the world would be a slow death with darkening skies resulting in loss of plant life, then animal life, oxygen and so on.

Then is when you would experience the mass rioting, lawlessness, murders, cannablism and things we can't even imagine.
