The Ship's flag won't necessarily point to the culprit.
Congratulations! I knew you'd get it!

You DON'T know who's responsible -- you only know you're under nuclear attack and you have mere minutes to retaliate. So you launch everything you've got at the likeliest suspects -- including Russia and China.

And that's the end of everything. An EMP is a mere annoyance at that stage.

No, you're not understanding. no doubt deliberately Wiping out Iran, North Korea or whoever will
prevent further attacks, but will not help the surviving Americans trying to live without electricty.
They'll be back to the stone age fighting over food stocks and water.
What you don't grasp is that there are always survivors. Life goes on, somehow.

No, you're not understanding. When the first nuke pops, MAD kicks in and EVERYBODY gets wiped out. Those nations not directly attacked starve during the resulting Nuclear Winter.

And while there may be a few survivors, they will survive at a stone age level.

Actually DT raises an interesting point. Put aside an EMP burst at high altitude with a radar track back to launch point. Just consider a Hiroshima-sized bomb going off in a harbor, with the source not immediately clear. Say a Paki nuke got loose and was detonated in the Port of Los Angeles. Response to that will be complicated and not necessarily nuclear, especially if the Paki government denies committing the act and only belatedly admits the theft of a warhead.

The cooling oil reservoir hole can be plugged. The main core and coil can not withstand a 30'06 AP round. Replacement IN-FEED transformers ( 500kV primary ) take over a year to manufacture. Many transformers of that voltage are made off shore.

In the event of a meteor hit like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, a direct hit vaporizing everything would be the best scenario. A meteor hitting the other side of the world would be a slow death with darkening skies resulting in loss of plant life, then animal life, oxygen and so on.

Then is when you would experience the mass rioting, lawlessness, murders, cannablism and things we can't even imagine.

I suppose a severe nuclear accident or chain reaction of nukes could present the same experience.
