Whatever the positive benefits of royally pissing off the Iranians (to be determined), it has subtracted from one of the campaign pledges: defeat ISIS. They're still there and now job #1 for our forces in the region is self-protection. Also, the people around Trump are now starting to sound a bit like the people around Bush. Beating our resident history teacher to the punch with this: "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." The proper choice would have been to cross the Ben Hai River in force and drive the North Viet Namese forces north. They would have had no choice but to fight. Then land two Marine Divisions plus other forces behind them and crush them in a hammer-and-anvil maneuver. Follow that up by going through North Viet Nam like Sherman went through Georgia -- only not so gently.
