Minneapolis delivers on its promise to defund the police

Does this make sense?..Crime up!..then cut the police budget...

Happy now? Minneapolis delivers on its promise to defund the police and wipes $8m from force's budget despite record crime levels plaguing city

Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved $8million budget cut for police and
Instead, funds will be directed to violence prevention and mental health services

Calls to defund police were sparked earlier this year after George Floyd's death
Since he died in police custody, violent crime rates across the city have soared

Cops are expensive compared to social workers.

    That's a 4% dip.

I guess Ray never worked any place that had to cut costs or reallocate funds.

Re: Cuts. The city is bowing to the political winds that currently blow. That is all. If there is blowback, the same people who voted this cut will reverse their position. That's how politicians do politics. It's just that simple. Expect nothing more. After all, the ones doing the politicking are ... democrats. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

The people of Minneapolis are getting the government they elected which is the government they deserve.

Maybe criminals will leave cities that haven't defunded their police and gravitate to Minneapolis and similar cities.

Well then you know how it goes....city budgets are under a lot of stress because of the pandemic.

Social workers do come cheaper than cops. If they want to try a "combined arms" approach to certain urban situations (social workers as light infantry supported by police as heavy weapons platoon) who is to say they are wrong to experiment.

My guess is they'll figure it out over time.

Actually Togey is a little person trying to act big in life. Togey has achieved little except on any forum when he can act big with Google information. Regardless of what one says Togey is more informed. Mention a rifle and Togey has better with an "actual" story to match. I baited Togey and he did a lot of Googling as I expected. I feel sorry for Togey, he could be an asset for this forum instead of an impediment. I wish Togey would do different, I really do.

It's not in him to do better -- there is a certain type of personality who, while intelligent, chronically underachieves. People like that feel superior to the rest of us, because of their intelligence, but are filled with hate because of their failure. They can't change.

You are right, I just wish it wasn't so.

The 17 supposedly "strong Federalist" State AGs signing on to the Texas lawsuit being a fine example from current events.

                            Generalizations invite thread drift.

                            Back to the OP,

The old ways got them the George Floyd debacle. They may have asked the question that a certain politician likes to ask: what have we got to lose? Try something different. If it doesn't work, go back.

but you know, since it was posted here in several if not a dozen threads, that the defund the police was about defunding the police and using other kindler gentler means to stop crime,

and prosecute cops vs retrain or redirect,

                              so cops are quitting,
                              crime is on the rise,
the softer/kindler/gentler stuff has not been worked out,

is there a plan to transition to the 'feelings' policing?

that's your neck of the woods, you have any insight?
