This incident does however demonstrate just how vulnerable our Western society is to computer disruptions. I mentioned a few months ago that I had written a novel on the subject and published it on Amazon ("An Oral History of the Pulse") and I can tell you that the more that I researched the subject the more frightened that I got. About 10 years ago the US Government did a study on the subject and concluded that if the North Koreans set off two nuclear bombs at an altitude of 400 miles, one over Western NY and another in the US South West, the entire North American electical grid would fail and be off line for at least a couple of years.

This really should be a wake-up call
In reference to gas prices. Last week in Illinois, away from Cook County, I was gouged $3.99 USD per gallon for premium blend. Not far off the advertised mark from your eastern Ontario prices.But....that was by the US gallon and not the litre.
In the late 80,s Canadian prices confused the heck outta me. Some stations selling by the litre while others were still selling by the imperial gallon. Rather than translate for the best prices, it was easier to pull into the station on my side of the road and the one beyond the traffic light.

back when there was a push to go metric, (late 80's?) I remember a few gas stations in this area (may have been Shell) that changed to Liter vs Gallon,

they did the math, and then when up a few cents, per liter,

confused a lot of folks that did not pay attention to the signage or pumps,

cheap gas!!!! woot!!!! then mad as a wet hen when they got 20 liters and not 20 gallons,

that company switched back shortly there after

In that same time frame some rectum in the Department of Transportation decided to run a test on posting speed signs in kph. The speed limit signs on Magruder Boulevard in Hampton, VA went from 55 mph to 85 kph. The result was chaos!!

BTW -- what business is it of the Department of Transportation to switch this country to the metric system.

Left Chicago heading towards Toronto. Ran into heavy ballgame traffic in Detroit. Bad timing on my part. Decided to have dinner in Windsor, get some sleep, and into Toronto the next day.
ON401 was actually moving well. Then a convoy of cars and pickups passed us followed by another. Decided to make good time so I got onboard.
Partner in the pickup with me looked around and nodded approvingly. Listening to music. Partner sipping Nehi and onion soup mix as I lit up the unused half of a dollar cigar. Took a puff and said "My! Ain't this purty 'round here!"
He was looking out the window counting phone poles going by at the rate of four to the seventh power. Looked at the speedometer a few times. The asked how fast we were going.
          Little over 100.
OK. After a few more signs asked what does KPH mean?
          Kilometers per hour.
Oh OK. Then asked what that was in miles per hour.
          About 62 1/2
          *pause*

"SLOW DOWN A- HOLE! I don't wanna go to jail. We ain't even from this F-ing Country!!!"

I humored him and pulled out of line. Made it into Toronto on time.

Special thanks to CW McCall for the lyrics I swiped to embellish my story.
