This is true. Just last month some of my light switches have mysteriously stopped working. I got them fixed. The house is almost sixty yrs. old.It isn't that the aluminum conductor doesn't have enough current carrying capacity, but that it's expansion ration is greater than copper. Constant tightening and loosening of the connection under load loosens the connection, causing it to overheat. It can be fixed by adding a copper connector to the end of the aluminum conductor, but not cheap.Last edited by dryheat; 01-11-2022, 07:07.If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.Comment

Don't know how long ago you are speaking of but I don't think aluminum is available any longer and hasn't been since it was banned/against code. Back in the 70's I was a teen in college so I wasn't into home repairs but I've never seen the stuff for sale.
Back in it's day though there was tremendous media hype about it like how great it was, how much better it was than copper and of course how much less it cost.Comment
