I think that the two lesson to be learned here are not that one should or should not give supplies to someone else but that 1) the West must, absolutely must, have very large stockpiles of consumables, particularly ammunition of all sorts and 2) that the West must maintain the manufacturing capability to quickly replace the consumables that are or will be used.
Its all very well to have an artillery shell that can identify and castrate an enemy general but if it takes two years to replace that artillery shell, you might be better off issuing your soldiers with kitchen knives to meet that objective
