Agree. Drones are flown remotely so the people controlling them know the coordinates, speed, direction and all other vitals. That's what makes them a drone plus they are sending back camera footage for further reference. Losing transmission or contact would have been known live at the very moment it happened.

At the same time, if the wreckage has fallen into their hands, that would be an intelligence coup for them -- getting hold of our technology.Agree. They already have one of our B2 style drones un-damaged. Some say it landed there, some say that Iran has the ability to guide in down. A gift from obama?
For the life of me I don't know why all U.S. equipment doesn't have some means of self destruction or remote control destruction. We go through this every time a hostile nation gets equipment from us.Comment

I remember that. The State Department produced a neat radio for the Viet Namese. It had both AM and FM capabilities (so a man on the ground could talk to aircraft.) It had a self-destruct button to keep it from falling intact into enemy hands. They already have one of our B2 style drones un-damaged. During training, when you mentioned the self-destruct, half the class would jump up and run off screaming. The other half would say, "THIS button?" ZAP!Comment

Our technology has improved so much since then though. Any drone could be equipped and controlled to explode as well as fly since it is in fact controlled by an outside source. Planes, even our own, should have some type of destruction capabilities in case they fell into the wrong hands or sold to an ally country that later turned against us. The plane wouldn't necessarily have to explode since human life is involved but the avionics could be equipped to fry or engine thrust controlled etc... While some countries would balk at such it could benefit them too unless they had intentions of using the planes against us in the first place.I remember that. We've all heard of isolated incidences where some ones car was shut down via the GPS, OnStar roadside assistance knowing you have a breakdown even w/o reporting it or subscribing to it along with police bait cars where the car is shut down and locked when stolen using remote control and more lately, self driving cars. Think what may be and should be available in a multi-million dollar piece of surveillance equipment since most technology mentioned has been around for decades.Comment

Why would we tell them? Let them find out the hard way, at the appropriate time. Our technology has improved so much since then though. So the US provacated the hit? That makes sense and would support Iran's act of shooting it down."The first gun that was fired at Fort Sumter sounded the death-knell of slavery. They who fired it were the greatest practical abolitionists this nation has produced." ~BG D. UllmanComment

The US intelligence system doing something SMART? Will wonders never cease!
I'm reminded of what Bill Buckley said about the attempted assassination of Sukarno, "It had all the earmarks of a CIA operation. Everybody in the room was killed BUT Sukarno."Comment
